In today’s age, there aren’t any limitations on what a woman should be or can be. Many women have achieved great things, giving a new definition and representation to who women are. According to Berger, He exclaimed that from the visual of a nude women in European oil paintings, one could see the standard in which women were being held to and how they were being viewed by men and people, showing us that society was constantly scrutinizing the appearance of women.  Although he made a good point for the past, in today’s world I do not agree entirely. As we move into an era that is more loving and open to the idea of all forms of beauty, women have more control on what standards they are being held to, whether it being their own or adopted. Berger further exclaims that in these paintings, women were being humiliated by their nakedness and the women in these paintings were aware of it. From my standpoint during the time I was brought up, sexuality is something incorporated in every platform possible but to say that it is solely based on what a man expects to see is completely inaccurate. Sexuality is still viewed the same in how society judges an image, as Berger suggested but women have more influence on what image is being portrayed of them and the message it sends to its viewer.

Introduction Blog Post

Hello Everyone,

My name is Bella Memoria Martinez. I am very excited to say that this is my first year attending college. My Major is Nursing but i’d like to specialize in Renal Dialysis. Attending school for this means way more than earning a degree or receiving a  high paying salary but to get a better understanding of a medical process that has helped many of my loved ones that are immunocompromised. I don’t particularly read books or write often but I do enjoy reading articles in Times magazines and like to read up on new technology that has been released. I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge on how to express myself and others’ perspectives in my writings.

  1. According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstien, when writing one should use the template of “entering the conversation”. In the book “They say/I say”, it explains the many advantages to using this model within your writing. The advantage that “ entering the conversation” displays in your writing, is by making an argument with others who have a different perspective of an idea as a way to build an understanding of how the other side feels. In that way, this will allow us to see beyond what we believe to be right as well as expanding our knowledge on the side that we disagree with.
  2. When looking at works of art most people that are analysing them see past a certain amount of detail that others tend to overlook or do not  notice. My view is that one should reach a sense of proficiency  in analytical skills in order to see all viewpoints, pay attention to detail, explain what they understand from it  and have  the ability to look at the situation differently. By having the ability to process art this way, there are no limitations on how one can use those analytical skills. This could be applied to all forms of daily life such as writings, ones lifestyle and/or professions.
