The advantages of using the “entering the conversation model” helps improve  the formality of a conversation or a monologue. This method guides the writer to ackowledge how to enter a conversation with an organized structure of text by sharing constructive and practical ideas based on what people are talking about. To use this method the writer must observe and analyze the ideas of others.

Learning how to interpret the art piece of someone helps to analyze situations more deeply. I believe every person has a different interpretation or point of view on how they see things and this build a sense of contradiction or agreement on something.

  1. According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, writers should use the model of “entering the conversation” because it engage others and gives them an idea about the topic one is trying to argue. This can be seen on “that we listen carefully to others, including those who disagree with us, and then engage with them thoughtfully and respectfully”. This shows that by allowing others to express their ideas one is able to understand the opponents perspective and be able to communicate a counterargument regarding about the issue, which in turn strengthening ones stand. This allows the opponent to understand the other argument while feeling engage.
  2. Learning to look at artwork help us analyze other situations because it can help one to examine a situation with precision and recognize patterns. Artwork can also train one to see different points of views that others may not see, thus allowing them to investigate further and more accurately.

  1. According to Graff and Birkenstein, writers should think in an “entering the conversation” way in their writing. The advantages of this model is, one, that it doesn’t leave readers confused as to why the writer mentioning whatever it is. Secondly, if readers have an opposing question or argument, it will be addressed, further strengthening the writers argument. In this way, the argument will not be weak, considering the writer is taking counter arguments into consideration and is aware of them.
  2. The smarthistory videos claim that looking at artwork helps analyze others situations. I partly agree and disagree. I agree because by looking at the details of an artwork, you can try to grasp a theme. For example, if someone is laughing, the background looks bright, etc. one might be able to assume it’s a happy situation. Also, artwork can tell about the time period or overall setting. However, I disagree in a way regarding the claim that artwork helps police, nurses, etc. In one video, for instance, they gave the example of diagnosing a patient based on if they had rashes or not. I feel in these examples, artwork isn’t important. One can tell if someone has rashes based on real life experiences, even if they have never seen artwork before. In this video, most examples do not really require artwork, and instead can easily be figured out through one’s own experiences, etc. However, I do agree that by looking at art of diagrams, etc., doctors, nurses and police can learn a lot.

According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, writers should use the model of “entering the conversation” in their writing. What are the advantages of this model?

“Entering the Conversation” is not only a terrific conversation starter but guides us to broaden our horizons with fresh new ideas. I also believe that having a comprehensive grasp of both perspectives is not only beneficial in reading/writing but in everyday life. What makes this method so special is that we can discuss and exchange ideas without suppressing the other’s perspective . This technique also kinda reminds me of shock value in a way that keeps readers intrigued; For example Gerald Graff said, “I like to think I have a certain advantage as a teacher of literature because I disliked and feared books when I was growing up.” You’d think since he wanted to be a literature teacher, he would’ve loved to read books which make you wonder & trigger numerous questions.

The smarthistory videos on the schedule this week discuss how learning to look at artwork help us analyze other situations. Do you agree or disagree? Why

I feel that art has a significant influence in a variety of ways. Not only does it keep the mind stimulated, but it also allows us to practice looking deeper into almost everything. Looking at art pieces helps us to practice examining, evaluating key aspects  & expressing them accurately and gaining greater knowledge by doing so.

  1. According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstien, when writing one should use the template of “entering the conversation”. In the book “They say/I say”, it explains the many advantages to using this model within your writing. The advantage that “ entering the conversation” displays in your writing, is by making an argument with others who have a different perspective of an idea as a way to build an understanding of how the other side feels. In that way, this will allow us to see beyond what we believe to be right as well as expanding our knowledge on the side that we disagree with.
  2. When looking at works of art most people that are analysing them see past a certain amount of detail that others tend to overlook or do not  notice. My view is that one should reach a sense of proficiency  in analytical skills in order to see all viewpoints, pay attention to detail, explain what they understand from it  and have  the ability to look at the situation differently. By having the ability to process art this way, there are no limitations on how one can use those analytical skills. This could be applied to all forms of daily life such as writings, ones lifestyle and/or professions.

  1.  According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, writers should use the model of “entering the conversation” in their writing. The advantages of this model are that; in this way the writers could express better their argument given their audience two points of view. Giving them the evidence of how their arguments are right. Also instead of simply being in an opposing or agreeing position, they can establish their point of view in the middle. Communicating to their audience that the two topics have curious and diverse points. Which would generate much more interest in the writing.
  2. I agree with smarthistory’s video, that looking at artwork helps you to analyze other situations. Because I think that if you already have in mind how to solve, or communicate how and why the artwork was made in such a way. You also already have an example in mind of how you might solve a situation or problem you are involved in.
