1-According to John Beger, advertising is used to achieve higher sales and capture customers’ attention. We carry in our mind the images that advertising shows. We can even see them in our dreams. Advertising proposes that we change our lifestyle if we buy a product that we will not even use. We purchase the products only because the person presenting them had a transformation, and we want to have it too. Advertising does that if we buy the products they offer, we will change our lifestyle by obtaining them. Showing us happy people sends a message that we need that product to have a life-like these people.

2- According to John Berger, oil paintings began with events from the life of their owner. In these paintings, you can see the wealth or current achievements of its owner. However, this does not include how he obtained such wealth. They don’t offer anything. It just shows what they already have. However, advertising shows us the perfect life we want to have, persuading us to obtain their services or their products “since we can thus obtain a full life.”

3- John Berger spoke of three dreams, the one that caught my attention the most was “the dream from later tonight.” In this particular dream, advertising is shown with very colorful vivid images, emphasizing that everyone is smiling. All people enjoy the products that surround them, and above all, they are products that give off pleasure. These products can attract you in a way that can show that our way of life is glamorous.

  1. According to Berger, Publicity images influences consumers to purchase their advertised products to make them feel glamorous when in reality many people can’t afford to live the “glamorous life.”
  2. The oil paintings are being created by an artist who’s actually drawing a picture through their personal perspective where publicity imagery wants the people to think by getting a certain thing, that’ll make the consumers feel as the models portray to feel in a vacation brochure for example.
  3. ” Those who lack glamour becomes faceless, almost non existent ,” Berger claims.  Some people try to portray themselves to be someone they aren’t just so they can be desired by some or even envied by others. Many will try to keep up with the current trends in designer clothes, fancy electronics or other materialistic items to make people think they are wealthy enough to live the “glamour life” when in reality those consumers will spend their last bit of money on these items just to say they own these fancy products they really can’t afford to have.

In renaissance paintings women that posed nude may have been bare but were not naked according to John Berger “to be nude is to be seen naked but not recognized as oneself a nude has to be seen as an object.” The models for the paintings were just seen as mere objects not as naked women set to be judged and hopefully found beautiful by men. Although women do have control over how they are seen in the media and can wear what they want, today’s society has set a standard for how women should look and how they should act. The perception of women is still influence by the male gaze . Many women look for acceptance in the court of opinion of men. The sexualization of women still occurs today Berger stated “I am only as naked as you see me” that is a truly relevant statement in todays times. Women can dress for themselves and feel confident in the way the look and talk but not all people see the confidence walking by they see the half naked woman or think that one can not wear an outfit because she may not be beautiful enough, she not sexy enough, or her body does not look like how they feel she should look and those who do not fit that standard are not socially accepted.

Women were objectified in similar ways such as the sexualizing aspect of it but the way one of the woman he interviews depicts nakedness in art as “too distracting” or “too exaggerated” which in one hand I can agree with to a certain extent, it could be too distracting from the actual concept of the art piece to certain viewers but on the other hand I still insist everything is all about perspective you can look at a nude painting and easily assume sexuality but with a mature & open mind you can look at a painting and not necessarily always think sexual. In European tradition nude implies an awareness of being seen by the spectator; “they’re not named as they are but how you choose to view the painting.” perfectly describes how perspective/Interpretation plays a big role. I do believe Nowadays women have more control in how they wanna be perceived,  Although they definitely do not have control in how not only men but also other women want to interpret them.

According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstien, when writing one should use the template of “entering the conversation” in their writing. This template has many advantages for the writer and the reader. Writers using this template can better argue on a subject with a open mind to what others agree and disagree on getting the reader or whom ever you are entering a conversation with to not only see and understand but question things in many different ways. Readers can better understand one, when entering conversation. One can also engage better in an argument with not only their own ideas but with the ideas of others.

I agree with smarthistory’s video, that looking at artwork helps you to analyze other situations. When staring at a piece of art you allow your mind to think as if you were the artist that created the piece, analyzing, inspecting and viewing things in a more unique way. When i find myself in a situation whether its by myself or with someone else i try to view things with an open mind for better understanding and clarification.

According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, writers should use the model of “entering the conversation” in their writing. What are the advantages of this model?

“Entering the Conversation” is not only a terrific conversation starter but guides us to broaden our horizons with fresh new ideas. I also believe that having a comprehensive grasp of both perspectives is not only beneficial in reading/writing but in everyday life. What makes this method so special is that we can discuss and exchange ideas without suppressing the other’s perspective . This technique also kinda reminds me of shock value in a way that keeps readers intrigued; For example Gerald Graff said, “I like to think I have a certain advantage as a teacher of literature because I disliked and feared books when I was growing up.” You’d think since he wanted to be a literature teacher, he would’ve loved to read books which make you wonder & trigger numerous questions.

The smarthistory videos on the schedule this week discuss how learning to look at artwork help us analyze other situations. Do you agree or disagree? Why

I feel that art has a significant influence in a variety of ways. Not only does it keep the mind stimulated, but it also allows us to practice looking deeper into almost everything. Looking at art pieces helps us to practice examining, evaluating key aspects  & expressing them accurately and gaining greater knowledge by doing so.
